Fences Recoups in Eight Weeks; Sets Record at Cort Theatre

The Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Fences will recoup its $2.8 million capitalization in just eight weeks of performances at the Cort Theatre, during the week ending June 13. The production, which stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis and has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards, is scheduled to close on July 11 after a limited run of 13 weeks.

Fences has broken the box office record at the Cort twice during its run, including the week ending June 6, when it grossed $1,024,316.50. It’s the second hit play revival in a row at a theater that hadn’t received much love from producers in recent years—before Fences began previews on April 14, Washington’s fellow Tony nominee Liev Schreiber starred in Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge at the Cort.

In addition to Washington as Troy Maxson and Davis as Rose Maxson, the cast of Fences includes Chris Chalk as Cory, Tony Award nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson as Jim Bono, Russell Hornsby as Lyons and Mykelti Williamson as Gabriel, with Eden Duncan-Smith and SaCha Stewart-Coleman alternating in the role of Raynell. The production is directed by Tony nominee Kenny Leon.
